Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No It’s SUPERFRUIT. And it is, apparently over here. Combining the tastes of two of my least favourite food articles, cucumber and melon this ‘melumber’ or more accurately pepino will set you back a cool £5 and is a relative of the tomato,
Pepinos have a high potassium content, which can seemingly help lower blood pressure, and are packed with vitamins A, B and C – which are said to protect against cancer and heart disease. They are also ideal for dieters as a 100g serving contains only 23 calories.
It’s native to Peru but also grows in New Zealand, California and other subtropical and temperate climates. Pepino is also known as Mellowfruit, Treemelon and Sweet Cucumber.
