Bloglog, ogg, WordPress and Widgets

I hear that MyBloglog is to rebrand as a Yahoo badged service which I suppose will get a wider range of people (or just yahoo-ists) onboard. I’ve used it to find other blogs but have been sometimes disappointed and annoyed at the number of “How to make money blogging” type people are on there (If I could filter these people out I probably would).Apple keyboard

I’ve had to redo some of the music files I’ve placed in my own blog from time to time as the file hosting service I was using (my File Hut) seems to have gone kaput and so have paid for a little extra space on WordPress which I thought would mean that I could employ some nice space saving and bandwidth efficient music file types other than mp3. Indeed you can upload both AAC and Ogg Vorbis encoded files but the inbuilt player only supports the streaming of mp3 and so if I move to Ogg encoded files it will rely more on an passing reader wanting to hear any embedded audio having a compatible player . Not a great hassle I guess especially if you include a link to appropriate available players or plugins but not as slick as having the no-brainer mp3 player embedded. I’d love to encode as AAC+ as it’s the most efficient and would still be dial up friendly in terms of download size but would again rely on an appropriate player or plugin to be installed by the reader so I remain in a quandary as I’d like to put in more audio including my own doodlings.

I’m nowhere near wanting to jump the WordPress.com platform to the pastures of self hosting just yet but am intrigued by the degree of interactive content and control over use of plugins and code that would help me do that but to some extent that’s gimmickry and window dressing and maybe I’ll just point to somewhere else if I want to experiment with audio visual content. I suppose I’d like a greater control of using a lot more of that external Web 2.0 social stuff that’s out there but selectively within the blog posts rather than the clutter of widgets on the blog page which is totally lost if I’m lucky enough to have somebody subscribe via an RSS reader.

Sometimes though it’s better to work with a limited palette. Things change so we’ll see.

    Hi em,

If you like playing with computer stuff, you’d like having a privately hosted WordPress blog. There are new widgets and plugins all the time, and some of them even work ;) You’d probably have enough space for music files. Here’s our current account disk usage: 27.16 of 49000 MB Used.

As to MyBlogLog, I added that to our blog mostly for the little pictures. I’m sure it’s good for something else; I just haven’t had time to figure out what.

Hi Grit – I’m sure I’d use WordPress the client version and don’t have too much fear over hosting technicalities etc but might start experimenting with that setup alongside what I’m doing now via Wordress.com just to see what the practicalities are. I’m certainly keen to hear what any .com to self hosted problems have been. I’m initially looking to have greater control over css initially but baby steps I suppose. Re Bloglog I think they are keen to add extra uses but if it gets Yahoo’d then who knows what would happen.
