Simple! Storage in stair steps. Not quite sure how easy this would be as it looks like your only handle is a small tag on each step-drawer and I guess you don’t want the draws to warp and stick due to the continual step use though I assume that’s all been thought of.
A neat idea indeed but not without problems, I suspect. Apart from the ones you mention,there is the question of dirt: stairs are quite dirty environments and I imagine “stair drawers” would soon collect their fair share of dust and grime.
While the “stair drawers” concept would work well on a straight, regular staircase, most staircases are neither straight nor regular. They bend, they twist, and their steps vary in width. This means that “stair drawers” could not be standardized but would have to be tailor made, adding to the cost. Probably very few steps in the average staircase would be suitable for drawers.
Not least, there is the safety aspect. Any tampering with a staircase raises the possibility that the structure will be weakened and the staircase will fail as someone walks on it, especially when carrying heavy objects. A fall down – or through – the stairs is always a risky business.
Even so, in a small and cluttered home, even one extra drawer would be welcomed. Will the idea catch on? We await further news with interest.
Hello SilverTiger – Yes it’s one of those things that when first seen I tended to go “of course, great idea” but then the doubts creep in and the “hang on a minute” questions started creeping in. As you say even one or two drawers would be a great help.
