Eco Kettle That Makes A 3 Second Cuppa

2007 June 9

Yet another way to make a cup of tea. This slightly pricey but innovative kettle and water filter solution bringsquickcup the water to near boiling point in around 3 seconds and claims to be eco friendly into the bargain.

The makers, Tefal claim the new kettle will save an average household around £30 a year in energy costs and is a 65% energy consumption reduction compared to a normal style kettle. The dispenser can equally produce cold filtered water too.

A flash video of how it works can be seen here.

Update: Aside from Currys, both Argos and Morrisons now sell this though the price point remains the same (UK).

I am usually sceptical of “new” methods of making tea on the grounds that where tea is concerned, like sex, we already know, and practise, all the variations.

This device, however, looks interesting. It’s surely a case of bringing the samovar up to date but is none the worse for that. It seems well thought out. Of course, we have to find out whether it does what it says on the tin.

Also, the price will have to fall. £60 is far too much for what is after all basically a kettle with a water filter and there are plenty of those on the market. Once pre-registrants have coughed up their inflated pride-price, however, I am sure the price will fall. How long before it appears in the catalogues of Argos et al?

Yep, put me down for one when the price drops to £20 which should be in about a year from now if not sooner.

Hi SilverT- it does sound intriguing and like you say get it down to that 20-30 quid level and it’s tempting. At the moment it’s a bit like seeing a toaster that costs 75 quid-you really have to be into toast to spend that kind of money. I’m really into Tea but not THAT into tea that I’d rush to lay down £60 for this. Like the hot and cold use though. I too am happy to let the must-have early adopters pay the launch price and see if it falls in a years time.

I thought this sounded great!!!! Really green!!! However when you think about all the disposable filters it kind of loses its ‘greeness’!!We have hot nearly boiling water on tap all day as we boil a full kettle in a morning and then pour it into a thermos flask that has a pump dispenser on it. The flask cost just £10. So we save money and energy without any gimmicks or dispoable filters!! It does the job and also makes it safer for our 11 year old to make hot drinks.

Oh V**** at last I’ve found a fellow thermos flask user. I picked up the habit in India and it saves far more time, effort and energy even than a super-dooper kettle. Not as exciting I know but far, far greener.

Don’t think this is a kettle!! It does not boil water. I bought one, tried it a couple of times and took it back. The water is just about warm enough for a cup of coffee (if you want to drink it immediately), but definitely cannot make a nice cup of tea.

Hello Simon- yes a lot of people have been let down by this one. We also now have a lot of kettles that claim eco-status just because we can see how much water we’ve put in them. Microwaving water is too dangerous a solution. It seems we’re stuck with energy guzzling kettles for now.
