Manual Lost In Translation

A package arrived this morning which contained an affordable replacement optical mouse for our computer and an el cheapo (but quite good) mp3 player and SD card reader.

I bought the mp3 player as basically I needed an SD card reader/writer so I could transfer recordings and time shifted net radio recordings from our computer for playing back on our DAB radio that accepts SD memory cards and as the player was the same price as many card readers (£8) I thought ‘ooh a multi function device’ and obviously couldn’t resist.

Sadly the supplied manual has lost something in the translation:

SD card use explanation:MP3 player

  1. Translation of technical manuals still hasn’t caught up with other areas of technology. These documents remain the by-word for incomprehensibility. The quoted passages read like something passed through the Google “translation” service (quotation marks used advisedly). Your blog pages read very much the same in Spanish and French via the “translation” buttons. (I don’t know enough German or Italian to check those languages as well.)

  2. Hello ST – I read several blogs via the translator and it’s not too bad. I get the gist anyway. Gadget wise I tend to think that if a written manual is needed then the product has been badly designed. You should be able to fake your way around the gadget without too much recourse to a doorstop sized manual. It ‘should’ be intuitive but often many gadgets, computers, stuff etc rarely are that kind of easy user experience for many people. My Dad won an mp3 player that was and is a nightmare to navigate and recently bought a new digital camera which he really finds easy to use. There should be ease of use or ‘human design’ prizes for these things.
