Brian Wilson That Lucky Old Sun
Brian Wilson
continues his return to creativity following his tour of Smile and various live appearances over the past few years with news of his latest composition, That Lucky Old Sun, which he will premiere at The Royal Festival Hall in London next month.
He has described the new work “five rounds interspersed with word”.
The work is inspired by Louis Armstrong’s version of the title song, which was originally composed by Beasley Smith and Haven Gillespie.

Hi - read your blog with interest. My thoughts on last night’s premiere can be summed up as a big disappointment, and time the man hangs up his boots. TLOS was an exercise in nostalgia - with recycled Wilson themes and musical motifs. Nothing new I’m afraid, and not a useful addition to the Wilson canon. What a shame. Hello Skinnywhiteboy, enjoyed the review. The bits I’ve heard of the new work do sound a bit derivative. Sort of Brian Wilson doing a Brian Wilson pastiche. He could have just relied on being a touring icon trading on the loved works so I have to salute any attempt to write new music. The inclusion of ’she’s leaving home’ is a curiously touching tribute and would love to have heard how accomplished his rendition was.
