The Mind Cassette Played Poptones
Where do these tunes come from that you suddenly find looping in your mind? Often they’re not even songs that have been personal favourites and sometimes even just snippets of songs you heard in passing. Yesterday’s
annoying sample loop was the old Heaven 17 ditty ‘Play to win’ from eons ago and in particular the short section that goes “And then he said… Have no secrets, hear no lies”. What? Does the subconscious play mind games and get into an internal dialogue with the conscious or am I just looking for order in the chaos. Or is my grey matter involved in an involuntary act of punding due to fluctuating dopamine levels (I think I’m analysing this way too much).

Mind Games

I was going to keep a ‘mental jukebox’ diary at one point, but then I thought it would be quite disturbing. I definitely think that there is sometimes a subconscious reason for the selection of music, but sometimes it can be caused by completely mundane things like the sound of a lorry braking, or the rhythm of someone tapping on a desk. For me, anyway. Or a line someone comes out with that is similar to one in a song.
I now also have ‘Play to win’ in my head. Thank-you so much for sharing…
No problem Schnozzles. I like to share my inner psychosis once in a while. I agree that sometimes a ‘toon’ can be triggered by simple things like the rhythm of the pace of your walk, the sounds of life but messages from lyrics worry me as I’m an atrociously ignorant of many lyrics and a chronic miss-hearer of words so I worry that I’m missing a subconscious I-ching like message of guidance but on the other hand…whatever.
I misread your comment on first reading and thought you’d said ‘the sound of a lorry barking’ (again I worry about the internal workings of the mush between my ears).
