Non Hormonal Contraceptive

2007 October 17

Contraception60 years after the contraceptive pill was developed it looks like a non hormonal alternative may be available. Rather than interfering with the woman’s monthly cycle this new pill will focus on preventing sperm from penetrating the egg by targeting a gene called ZP3 via a process called RNA interference. For those women that are looking for a way to prevent pregnancy without using barrier method contraception and without the dangers and side effects of hormone based contraceptives then this new method of contraception ,which may be available as a skin patch may be a welcome breakthrough and an additional option alongside the male contraceptive pill (culturally the harder sell that requires a significant change in male heterosexual responsibility) and the anticipated pill to turn off menstruation itself temporarily.

The Times has a visual explanation of how this contraceptive works.

I wonder if the non-hormonal pill will lack the cancer risk in “older” women.

Hi Jonolan- We’re promised must lower health risks but only time will tell as to the potential side effects and health risks, if any. Obviously for those for whom hormonal contraceptive solutions present increased side effects and/or health risks then this planned alternative may be worth investigation as and when it becomes freely available.
