Dead Man Talking
Being a voice over artist can be a great career move for actors and others blessed with an in demand voice for TV film and corporate video. There are voices I’ve got to recognise over the years whether on adverts or TV programs.
Protect And Survive
Patrick Allen had a very recognisable voice. At one point he was due to be the last voice many of us in the UK probably would have ever heard at the height of the cold war when he was the voice of civil defence public information films designed to tell us what to do in the time (two minutes?) before a nuclear attack was due. It was his voice from these films that you heard at the start of Frankie goes to Hollywood’s Two Tribes record announcing “when you hear the air attack warning, you and you family should take cover”. Part of those original protect and survive films can be see here.
Life After Death
Latterly Patrick Allen became the voice of digital channel e4 (he can be seen and heard here)with his familiar over the top style. Sadly he passed away in 2006. The unnerving thing is that I still hear his voice on e4 and elsewhere. That’s because ‘voice over man’ Peter Dickson has stepped into his shoes and is able to sound almost exactly the same. I can’t make up my mind if this is flattery or stepping into a dead mans still warm shoes.A good example of how close to Allen’s voice he can get is here with his advert for the currant bun.
He (Peter Dickson) has an amusing web site though.
