Whilst continuing to trawl through various old analogue tapes I found this live recording of Kissing the Pink from 1983.The Last Film was a bit of a one hit wonder from that year and this is part of a live concert from a very promising synth pop band of the time. I’ve done my best to curtail the excessive high frequency ‘tizz’ in the top end of the recording but as it’s a peculiarity of the tape formulation used at the time it is at least an authentic representation of analogue distortions albeit triggering a few digital sonic artefacts (you what?).

Tape Archive: Smacking Edward Fox

After waking up a few days ago with ‘where’s Captain Kirk’ pinging around my inner mental jukebox and being put in mind of a few other quirky vintage recording in a similar genre pulled from the depths of my memory it was a pleasure to run into one of my previous mentions whilst transferring some old analogue recordings. Edward Fox by Manchester group Smack was a gloriously off the wall item in which a supposed article and interview with the actor is read out almost verbatim and which reminds us of quite how intriguing Mr Fox’s thoughts were at that time.

Bowie continues by stating that he doesn’t like what Springsteen was doing at that time and manages to crowbar in a couple of tracks from his then new Lodger album.

This is part one of a 2 hour ‘desert island discs’ type programme that Davie Bowie recorded and was broadcast on 20th May 1979. There is no interviewer. Just a slightly self conscious and sometimes awkward Bowie who plays the music that he liked and influenced him up to that period in time.

Some years ago I digitally cleaned an old vinyl record that had seen better days. It was scratched and worn but I was able to get most of the worst clicks and pops out. After all that work on someone’s behalf I find that the recordings are now available via i-Tunes and there are mp3 versions out there with the accompanying storyboard comic included.

The original: Spiderman - from beyond the grave-a Rockomic was released in 1972 and is a quite well made audio drama featuring Marvel’s Spiderman with period original 70’s music tracks embedded along the way.

Here’s part of the semi-cleaned up vinyl version anyway which is a bit of cheesey fun on headphones.

Minimal Sound Sketch

Another personal audio doodle of the minimalist persuasion.Not sure what this one reflects other than maybe my state of mind at the time but it was an entirely immersive experience. The bass part is probably barely detectable unless listened to on headphones or hi-fi but the doodle stands either way.

Tape Archive: Bowie Interview Feb 1979 Part 2

This is the 2nd Part of an interview between Nicky Horne and David Bowie from February 13th 1979. This section begins by referring to Bowie’s then very recent acting in the film Just a Gigolo as potentially ‘wooden’ (you’ve got to admire Nicky Horne’s ability to not overly ingratiate himself with the guest).

I’ve left one of Bowie’s personal music choices in, namely La Düsseldorf by the band of the same name which then consisted of original Kraftwerk drummer Klaus Dinger along with Thomas Dinger and Hans Lampe who were sometime collaborators with Neu!

Questions include Bowie’s thoughts on Disco and disposable music and a pertinent question concerning Bowie’s comments he made a a year or so earlier that seemed to align him with fascism and which Bowie attempts to put into context and clarify.

Tape Archive: Bowie Interview Feb 1979 Part 1

This is part one of an interview between Nicky Horne and David Bowie from February 13th 1979. Listening to the London phone callers still amuses me. The sound of the old telephone exchanges clicking away with crossed lines together with the surprisingly high quality of the caller subject matter (One caller floors Bowie by asking his opinion of Stanislavsky) though another chides him with a swift ‘Shut up’ after Bowie is playfully cheeky to her.

Anyway sorting some of these rarities out has taken a lot longer than I had anticipated and I’ll be breaking many of these longer recordings down into sensible chunks such as this first 20 minute section.

Tape Archive: Paddy McAloon Interview 1985

This is the 2nd Prefab Sprout Interview I have from 1985 which takes place after the previously posted session . Paddy McAloon seems quite enthused by Thomas Dolby’s production of the Steve McQueen album and is already dismissive of how well previous album Swoon would stand up in 1985’s move towards a more heavily produced sound.

Tape Archive: ZTT Interview 1985

This Interview with two thirds of the ZTT record label from 1985 is an interesting look back at the label that fostered Frankie goes to Hollywood , The Art Of Noise and Propaganda onto the mid 1980’s. Producer Trevor Horn and wife Jill Sinclair probably reveal more about the workings of the then fledgling label without the hyperbole of Paul Morley. It’s interesting to hear the role that Dave Robinson of Stiff records played in plugging the physical product of The Art Of Noise.

Other artists on their rosta at the time achieved less of a high profile impact including the French torch singing of Anne Pigalle and systems music of Andrew Poppy.Nevertheless they illustrated the high standards that were often set by the record label directors.

The interview is quite poignant as Jill Sinclair has been in an induced coma since 2006 following a tragic accident.

This interview is placed here with the greatest respect to her friends and family and honours the place of ZTT in music history. We all wish for her eventual recovery.

I thought I’d post another part of the 1985 Godley & Creme Interview as stats seem to indicate a recent keen interest. I thought I’d place the audio from that interview here. If anyone is interested in the whole video then contact me and I may be able to point you to a decentralised torrent of the 320Mb video (Azureus torrent client required).I’ve kept the advert break in both the video and audio.

Tape Archive: Bowie Earls Court 1978 Report

This was an outside broadcast from David Bowie’s Earls Court performances in 1978 (between June 29th and July 1st 1978). Mike Smith was the outside broadcast reporter reporting from inside the giant bathroom that is Earls Court and talking to fans outside (were you amongst them?). Perhaps an indication of Bowie’s stature at that time that an ongoing report from a live concert was deemed report-worthy. The studio side presenter was Nicky Horne.

Tape Archive: News Feb 1985

News from February 1985 after an IRA bomb had exploded outside a Marks and Spencer’s in Paris. The dead man reported hear was a French Warehouse foreman, Leonard Rocha. The Middle East is, as always an ongoing part of the news. The Miners strike is still in progress though by this time the end was near.
