Here’s something I’ve meant to share or a while. It’s part of a radio phone which I date as Monday January 17th 1983. It’s interesting as a historical piece as it’s a small window on the cultural  changes in our society revealed by both the host and the ordinary public calling in to comment.

There’s a slight topical link here with regard to the recent riots in Tottenham, London prompted by a shooting by the police. This recording references the mistaken shooting of Stephen Waldorf on January 14th 1983 by police on the streets of Kensignton, London.

Also referenced is the public’s opinion on the launch of breakfast television on the BBC which happened that very morning.

Oh and no surprise in the traffic report which tells us that the Blackwall tunnel is yet again closed.

Another quick binaural recording (best listened to on headphones). A mundane Friday morning. Birds twitter, nearby cars, aircraft fly overhead and the near sound of a Tesco delivery.Ah the suburbs.

My first meagre return to some binaural audio recording (headphones required) for very many years (the last attempts were very much back in ye olde analogue days of yore). This is (honest) the sound of a running tap filling the bathroom sink (riveting stuff I know). Once I figure out how to provide decent wind noise protection I expect I’ll try a few recordings out and about.

A Bill Nelson Interview circa the Trial by Intimacy (book of splendour) period. There’s still a fair amount of interest in Nelson ranging from his Be Bop Deluxe days onwards and I believe the Nelsonica fan conventions continue to take place both here in the UK and in the US.

A slice of Hull’s Indie band scene from 1983 and the ever so slightly anti-corporate Red Guitars. Rediscovering this little gem reminds me there are many tunes that fail to make the big time pop chart but still have their place in the history of rock. It certainly sounds very early 80′s doesn’t it but I still find it very powerful and expertly crafted.

Long time no tape archive material so I had a quick delve & remembered a cassette I was given long ago featuring rough demo versions of songs that would eventually become David Bowie‘s Scary Monsters album. So here’s an early version of the song that I partly named this blog after, Up the hill backwards.

If you’re familiar with the album version you’ll notice the different lyrics here, particularly the section with to “Skylab is falling”.

Whilst continuing to trawl through various old analogue tapes I found this live recording of Kissing the Pink from 1983.The Last Film was a bit of a one hit wonder from that year and this is part of a live concert from a very promising synth pop band of the time. I’ve done my best to curtail the excessive high frequency ‘tizz’ in the top end of the recording but as it’s a peculiarity of the tape formulation used at the time it is at least an authentic representation of analogue distortions albeit triggering a few digital sonic artefacts (you what?).

After waking up  a few days ago with ‘where’s Captain Kirk’ pinging around my inner mental jukebox and being put in mind of a few other quirky vintage recording in a similar genre pulled from the depths of my memory it was a pleasure to run into one of my previous mentions whilst transferring some old analogue recordings. Edward Fox by Manchester group Smack was a gloriously off the wall item in which a supposed article and interview with the actor is read out almost verbatim and which reminds us of quite how intriguing Mr Fox’s thoughts were at that time.
