Tape Archive: Bowie Interview Feb 1979 Part 2

Bowie79radioThis is the 2nd Part of an interview between Nicky Horne and David Bowie from February 13th 1979. This section begins by referring to Bowie’s then very recent acting in the film Just a Gigolo as potentially ‘wooden’ (you’ve got to admire Nicky Horne’s ability to not overly ingratiate himself with the guest).

I’ve left one of Bowie’s personal music choices in, namely La Düsseldorf by the band of the same name which then consisted of original Kraftwerk drummer Klaus Dinger along with Thomas Dinger and Hans Lampe who were sometime collaborators with Neu!

Questions include Bowie’s thoughts on Disco and disposable music and a pertinent question concerning Bowie’s comments he made a a year or so earlier that seemed to align him with fascism and which Bowie attempts to put into context and clarify.

AAC+ Encoded Version:
For those bandwidth sensitive or dial-up listeners who may have problems with streaming a 23 Mb mp3 file then there is a high quality AAC+ encoded * version of the same interview sized at only 5 Mb in size available here.

Tape Archive: Bowie Interview Feb 1979 Part 1

This is part one of an interview between Nicky Horne and David Bowie from February 13th 1979. Listening to the London phone callers still amuses me. The sound of the old telephone exchanges clicking away with crossed lines together with the surprisingly high quality of the caller subjectBowie79radio matter (One caller floors Bowie by asking his opinion of Stanislavsky) though another chides him with a swift ‘Shut up’ after Bowie is playfully cheeky to her.

Anyway sorting some of these rarities out has taken a lot longer than I had anticipated and I’ll be breaking many of these longer recordings down into sensible chunks such as this first 20 minute section.

AAC+ Encoded Version:
For those bandwidth sensitive or dial-up listeners who may have problems with streaming a 19Mb mp3 file there is a high quality AAC+ encoded * version of the same interview sized at only just over 4Mb in size available here.

Tape Archive: Bowie Earls Court 1978 Report

This was an outside broadcast from David Bowie’s Earls Court performances in 1978 (between June 29th and July 1st 1978). Mike Smith was the outside broadcast reporter reporting from inside the giantBowie 78 bathroom that is Earls Court and talking to fans outside (were you amongst them?). Perhaps an indication of Bowie’s stature at that time that an ongoing report from a live concert was deemed report-worthy. The studio side presenter was Nicky Horne.

A smaller sized AAC+ encoded version of this audio can be found here .

The news from Monday 19th November 1979 (if my workings out are correct) as read by Nicky Horne on Capital Radio (London regional). I’ve left the adverts in to give some flavour and context.

Tape Archive: Conversations With Bowie 1979

More unearthings from the old cassette archive as it gets slowly digitised. Here’s one for Bowie appreciative’s such as myself. The cassette played as if it was recorded yesterday albeit complete with the usual FM interference and other analogue anomalies.

This was broadcast on Capital radio in the London area on May 14th 1979. Some competition winners got to interview Bowie and for the second half of the programme (in which I had tape problems and which I may try to rescue at a later date) was a track by track talk through of the then new album Lodger. The then Capital radio ‘serious rock’ DJ back then was (little) Nicky Horne who now hangs out on Planet Rock and who was previously on ClassicFM.

All files are dial-up friendly AAC+* and sizes range from 300-700Kb.
