All That Scratching Is Making Me Itch

Itch Scientists (wait for it) from the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Centre (for it is they) have ‘discovered’ that we do not scratch for pleasure. A study revealed that whilst scratching there are no areas of pleasure in the brain stimulated but that the action did boost activity in the prefrontal cortex which apparently is associated with compulsive behaviour.

In essence we scratch to relieve the itch.

The study is written up in The Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
